BMW e30 320is / 2.3
« on: October 28, 2013, 01:48:43 pm »

To greet you all, I'm Mario from Serbia. In the beginning immediately apologize for my poor knowledge of English. I am starting a project and I need all your help. Thank you all in advance.

Its my BMW e30 320is cabrio 93y.  He was originally a 318i but 3 years ago I put S14B20 engine. Now i am planing to put S14B23 with VEMS. The main question is what is required of a sensors to install VEMS?

You can use all your standard sensors, but your crank sensor might not work, it´s best to scope it with a oscilloscope to see what it looks like, I´m guessing it´s the flywheel teeth and a single reference tooth on the crank as well (Motronic 1.0 version)

You can always add a 60-2 trigger wheel on the front pulley to simplify the ecu installation

I want to install carbon airbox, so i must replace this junk of volume air flow sensor. What is the best to install in thet situation? MAP sensor?

Ideally you will then mount a variable resistanse TPS sensor like from a M50 or similar.

Hi Mario,

Like Gunni said I would first start off with you crank signal. With our US engines we can add a 60-2 front crank pulley like number 1 in this picture: http://www.penskeparts.com/DiagramsMain.aspx?vid=47318&rnd=03192010  you can then run this car with a VR crank sensor very easily and get a good signal.

http://www.penskeparts.com/DiagramsMain.aspx?vid=47312&rnd=03192010   -    stock e30 m3 crank sensor in transmission - I would not use this if I were you but it is possible to use.

If you can wait a week or two I can check out a e30 m3 at the shop for more specifics.

Are you going to be running very high duration cams or stock? A on board map sensor like a 300 or 400kpa would be very nice most likely.

Have you already ordered your vems? if you need faster help shoot me an email [email protected]

At first, it'll be a factory engine that would VEMS made to work right.  After that, i will install a 284/276 degree Schrick Camshaft and Carbon airbox.
BMW M20 and M50 engine has 60-2 front crank pulley. Can I use  puls generator (crank sensor) from M20 engine? TPS from M50 engine?  Wide band O2 sensor?

You can use whatever sensors you want if your willing to build a harness and brackets for the sensors. If I were doing this I would get the crank sensors off a bmw 318 with a m42 engine. It should be very close to plug and play. m50 tps work very well. If you wanted you could make a hall cam trigger pretty easily if you wanted to get rid of the factory ignition distributor.

you can use either the stepper channels or one of the P259 channels that has a pullup already.
