36-1 - best position for missing tooth

After a delay of 18 months (renovating a house) I have finally got back to my aircooled VW VEMS engine project.  I will put a thread up this afternoon.

Want to take the rotating assembly to be balanced next week so I need to remove the missing tooth from my 36 tooth trigger wheel.

I was thinking of removing the 5th tooth BTDC - as is used with the Ford EDIS system. Any reason not to use this tooth?

To identify the tooth to use, set the engine to 90deg BTDC and mark the tooth next to the sensor.  That will be the one to cut.

That might be a tad low, maybe 6th or 7th tooth?

Each tooth is worth 10 degrees

Depending on where your sensor is fixed, will determine which tooth to remove.

As Rob says, if you set the engine to 90 degrees BTDC, then mark the tooth that the sensor points to. That will be the least confusing method, and hard to get it wrong. Or, set the engine to TDC and then count 9 teeth from the tooth the sensor points at, in the direction of rotation

Thanks for the advice.  I took the tooth off around 90 degrees from where the sensor will be fitted (the engine isn't assembled yet, but I have a cardboard template for my sensor mount)
