Title: Time Attack S13 Race Car : Plug and Play VEMS
Post by: sm on March 07, 2007, 06:40:16 pm
Well, lets start at the begining, as the ECU is afair way down the build ...

We started with a rust free shell, and a blown engine, as well as one of those crappy autoboxes ...

Some rust
(http://media.sxoc.com/contributors/sm/S13b/DSC00102a.JPG)
Some cleaning, was later primed
(http://media.sxoc.com/contributors/sm/S13b/DSC00104a.JPG)
some more cleaning, was later primed
(http://media.sxoc.com/contributors/sm/S13b/DSC00105a.JPG)
perfect sill, dont need touching
(http://media.sxoc.com/contributors/sm/S13b/DSC00107a.JPG)
oily tunnel, should really get it clean, however its VERY oily from the blown engine. Did the worst of it in the engine bay but I'll steam clean it before the engine gets fitted as the best plan.
cleans and primed battery tray
(http://media.sxoc.com/contributors/sm/S13b/DSC00109a.JPG)
found some rust here - very small amount
(http://media.sxoc.com/contributors/sm/S13b/DSC00110a.JPG)
paint looked thin here, but wasnt really rusty

Day 4 of the build...

I just had to take a picture of how blue the sky was ... before locking myself in the barn .....
Went to do some lightening ... but my hole-saw broke
Things that were primed yesterday were now smoothrited.
As you can see silver smoothrite is a perfect match for a Grey facelift.

How did I miss this yesterday ......

then back to the interior

Which is now 100% de-soundproofed - glad it was cold so it was brittle but still a right bitch of a job!

So, next Job, remove the big gay middle pedal, and get 3 pedals for me to use ...
However this is as far as I got as I didnt have the 34mm hole-saw with me ....

Roll on Day 5

Day 5 of the build...

I noticed the rear bumper support was very heavy ...
Went to do some lightening ... but my hole-saw broke again, so read instructions, 250rpm with cutting oil.. I had it on full speed, no lube  :wack:

Got the important hole drilled first though
(http://media.sxoc.com/contributors/sm/S13b/DSC00136a.JPG)
The manual accelerator is lighter :wack: as well as being easy to change and having my pedal extensions already sorted.
The brake pedal was an arse to swap, steering column is on the way.
end result ... a manual car
The clutch damper unit thing is fitted too, but no pics.

Took time out to fit some mods, Apex steering rack poly bushes

Wire brushed and primed some bits of very minor surface rust I found that I had missed.

I did some more drilling later on in the evening, till my drill blew up :wack:
I'm still only half way accross the bumper support....
I did get the cage in before the drill passed on at least ..

I wanted it rolling by the end of today, not much left, mainly the bushes of the rear hubs and fitting + diff.

I seemed to be fannying around with little jobs for most of the day ...

Back at work tommorrow, so I'll have to do the little bits in the evening, which I was trying to avoid doing .. I was sure a week off work would be long enough

It will be ready to go to DCMS on time though, for engine fitting, and down to Garys for VEMS & mapping shortly after that.

I've failed to tackle the splitter, or brake ducting at all though :( or clean and paint the now de-soundproofed interior :annoyed:

Today Phatbob swapped the 4 hole CAS disk for a 24 hole one and solved the 1 hiccup in the plug and play system - no pics as I wasnt there, however I heard the car running and idleing on the phone.

Yes, thats installed and running :D :D

Got an update, from APT in Norwich, my Tuners, via Rob :D
Theres no Cat, just a full 3" bore exhaust/drainpipe.
Quote from: [email protected]
Just been talking with Gary , he's got the car to idle on the SARD 1000cc injectors with the following gas analyser readings:
270 hc's
1.0 co
1.0 o2
1.00 lambda
14.4 co2

I'm rather pleased about this as it goes towards proving that our injector control code is as good as we've always said it was!

Looking forward to seeing the power figures now.

Well, its spent all day on the dyno ...  still some tweaking but my Tuner is VERY happy with the VEMS.

Quote from: Gary@APT
heres the best graph may be a little more to squeeze with a more stable boost, but making good power for spec!!

you can see how boost is a little unstable but not bad for a low pressure actuator
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y152/APT/DYNOSM2.gif)

overall the vems looks to be the bollocks,we are only running the 1000cc sard's to only 58% but idle control is amazing

i reckon kev it will be great on track look how long the torque spead is:thumbs:

Well Time Attack round 1 was at weekend.
I'm happy, got 8th with a cracked manifold, 6 of the cars that beat me had over 500bhp, and was 0.35s of 6th, and the first RWD car.

Next round I'll have more front aero parts and will have number 4 runner welded to the manifold flange again .....

Hi, car looks excellent & obviously is doing the bizzo! I have a vested interest in the engine specifically as I'm in the process of building a CA18DET for my Relaint Scimitar SS1 Ti (to replace the CA18ET thats already in there!). What spec is your engine / turbo / ancillaries as you are getting pretty much bang on the power I'm after from mine. I'm building the base engine at the moment (wisecos, pauter rods etc...). I'm in a quandy as to ems at the moment as the ET is running Emerald M3D but I'm also building a bike which I need an ECU for which is likely to be VEMS at the moment but it could easily swap around......

The Engine is a APT engine, www.ap-tuning.co.uk just a basic build, wiscoes. cometic 1.9mm headgasket, 256/8.5 cams, tubular manifold, KA24DE throttle body, standard elbow, GT2871R 0.64 housing, 1000cc injectors running flat oput at 58%, 3" turbo back exhaust with 3 silencers to keep it under 98dB drive-by for trackdays.

Do you mind if i ask how much he charged and who you delat with.

Well I also had some other work done, and he is helping me out a little too to get the car to race spec.

I believe he has quoted around £500 for other mapping jobs similar to mine, thats also similar to what he charges for other standalone ECU's

rob pasted me the vids so I gave em a looksy, good lines with some honest mistakes, but you commented them all yourself, so you know which is a good thing :)

to much curb makes the car unstable and is not good, on some tracks you can't hit the curbs at all in some turns, while on wet you DONT won't to hit any curbs so thats a tip to note.

when letting the car out you wanna pretty much drop it either on curb all the way out if flat and try, or on exactly the white line if rainy or no curb, no more no less.

now when it comes to brakeing, stay 0.5cm from white line as if you hit it with a wheelset you will have uneven traction and get a unstable car under brakeing.

with a whole lot laps more you will be able to do this perfect I think, and will also take the experience to other tracks, new tracks is always hard, but if you have a good base it sure helps!

what setup are you running on the car? suspension? pads? wheel psi? wheels? tires? camber front&rear, toe in front, caster etc?

must say it really appears to have good turnin on the video, and a good even power curve. but everything can be improved! as an example here on our local tracks we can race with uneven psi/camber for  getting the last few nano seconds ;) (only for small courses usually)

what pads are you running on the k-sport, and have you measured caliper flex? a tip can be to have them drilled with a few extra cross braces.

regards Anders

p.s. you really do have a hole saw fetish :D what did you weigh in at?

Car has coilovers with springs that are a touch hard 10kg/mm fronts and 8kg/mm rears, they are my sponsors own brand but come out of the same factory as Apexi N1's, and look remarkably alike ;)
Uprated anti-roll bars, medium front (to combat understeer) and hard rear.
Running around 32psi on DJ01's, probably need to be a little lower, the Team will have a tyre temp gauge by the next round to help tune the pressures.
DS2500 pads.
I'm running as much camber as I can on the front, need some longer lower arms to get any more - just under -2 degrees, 7.5 castor and 2mm toe in. Rear is more like -1.5 camber, 2mm toe in. Wheels are reasonable light 17x8's

I havent a clue what it weighs as yet, I would guess around 1200. I Broke the rear screen the day before the race and had to use a spare boot, for the next round I'll have a plastic rear screen :D

Apex of course ;)
Curved to fit just like the original, however you can do the pikey way and just bolt in a sheet of lexan and try and get the curve yourself, JRTuning ben managed this without it looking too bad.

I'll have a proper check.

Been a while since I posted on this thread, the motorsport and car-show season has been VERY hectic.

I finished 8th at TimeAttack round 2 at Silverstone
Forgot how to drive at Knockhill for round 3, finished way down
And then a 15th in the Final at Brands, which was a better drive than the result shows.
Just need to some some budget for next year and take everything a step onwards. There is also likely to be a return of a RWD or 2WD class which will help a lot. If there had been a RWD class this year, like last year, then I would have had a 1st, 2nd and 3rd over the year :D

I also ran in Ten of the Best  www.totb.co.uk an event I have wanted to try for a while. The event is a 3 discipline event, drag, top speed and handling. I cant launch and a 350bhp car is never going to be great on top speed however handling is another thing. The RWD class was quite competative, with kit-cars & lotus dominating the top slots, well expect for me, stuck in 3rd in a lotus sandwich.

I was lucky enough to be funded to go racing in Sweden last week :D Apex Performance were invited over to an event run by The Nissan 200SX Owners Group of Sweden (www.200sx.nu) (http://www.200sx.nu)). To both of these thank you for the opportunity and hospitality

Myself and Yak got a 26 hour ferry Wednesday night from Hull to Gothenburg arriving at 7 in the morning. A 200mile drive faced us at the other side to an airfield in south Sweden.

We did manage a tourist visit to the circuit where F1 once raced - Anderstorp, on the way. I'll have some pictures and footago of this at a later date.

Friday night were treated to a meal by the 200SX OGS, while we tried to remember everyones name

Early start Saturday, breakfast at 06:30 and then straight to the airfield. We were soon practicing the "SuperStage". This course is laid out exactly as to a standard, so that times from other events at other venues can be compared. Even F1 cars have set times on it!
Here is a map of the course, the gates are marked in red.

Before we went we had watched a couple of you-tube vids to see what we were up against.
This 944 took the course record in 2005, in 1:24:84

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0doDdJyDGg8 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0doDdJyDGg8)

We had been set 1:30 as a target by the Swedish, and we had this in the bag at the end of the first half-day.

This afternoon would see us do some drag racing.

Some even more crazy cars turned up, including a sequential-turbo S13  with no room under the bonnet it was just left sticking out of the bonnet :wack:

There was also an ex-endless Skyline that ran a 8.9 pass in Japan.

Nice to see a classic too, a 260 IIRC

I ran a personal best of 13.04@112mph  While Yak, having never drag raced did a 5 or so runs before letting his LUK clutch have the afternoon off.

Another Early start on Sunday, 06:30 breakfast, and back to the airfeild.

Today would be "SuperStage" all day.

I got a ride in this Ethanol (E85) powered Beast. 500+rwhp
(http://media.sxoc.com/contributors/sm/Sweden07/etohbeastfront.jpg)

I have some more video of this car, and the massive amount of custom fabrication on the car. I'll sort this at a later date.

As we had all day on the SuperStage Yak and I thought we should have a go in each others cars. I managed to wipe a cone out and crack Yaks big gay splitter (sorry) but I also beat his current best time with only 2 attempts  and heres the 10mB vid of it. (http://"http://media.sxoc.com/contributors/sm/Sweden07/sm%20in%20yaks%20car1.avi")

Yak has never really driven my car, and its a lot easier to get in a slower car and drive fast than get into a faster car and go flat out. Yak is a very capable driver, so other than warning him that the brakes are lots lots better so he doesn't flat-spot my expensive track tyres, and asking him to be more careful than I was in his  He got to play, I think he was a little shocked by the difference between the cars :wack:

***Insert Vid here - Yak is uploading***

By this time in the day the 200SX OGS were having their AGM in the airfield hanger and that left only 3 of us lapping the Superstage - Time for some serious practice.

At this point my best time was a 1:26:50, which I had done twice, but this soon tumbled and soon I had bettered the fastest time of the day set by Niclas, our host and chairman of the 200SX OGS. He had run a 1:24.82 in his GT3071 equipped S13, and I'd done a 1:24.81 again I had recorded this time twice!

With the meeting over Niclas was back on the superstage determined to beat my time....  and he did. A 1:24.60 was posted while some extra cone-marks were added to his bumper.

I wasn't sure where I could gain time, but I hadn't hit a marker cone all weekend in my car (only in Yaks), so I went out determined to get closer to the gates and see if I could find the 0.2+ seconds I needed.

I did!!  I found 1.2 seconds  and posted the fastest time of the day. A 1:23.59!

Niclas did go back out but one of his engine mounts let go and that was the end of his running. However the rain came not long after, after a mainly dry weekend so soon everyones day was over. Well except Yak, he kept running in the wet, he loves it.

The vid of my fast lap is here

Once again, massive thanks to Apex for accepting the invite to Sweden and sending me and Yak out there. Really was a very special opportunity that doesn't happen often, and I'm very grateful to the hospitality of the 200SX OGS and the generosity of Bren and Apex to pay for the costs of the trip out there :Plug:

Unfortunatly I wont get back to Emmaboda this year, the event where I could go back to defend my crown is 12th October. Which is also the date of the UK Time Attack final @ Snetterton.

I'll update this project as we have moved the car forward again this year, and got some good results. The car is still using VEMS to great sucess.
