Title: First running of my 2.5 litre Impreza project
Post by: dnb on September 01, 2008, 12:09:34 am
Using my version 1 "plug and pray" loom adaptor and the car harness modified to use the VEMS IGBTs.
All done with the standard Impreza triggering system too :)

No mapping time yet - car still needs brakes and intercooler installing.

THat´s great news,

I cant see the video on my work, but i assume there is no trigger/cranking errors,

What firmware are you using?.

And i would like to know if all of your ground wires are wired together, that´s what i was recommended, but i´m not sure that´s the best option

What year are your Impreza?, as i got a better result with the my99 Impreza, but when left in the cold for the night, resulted in poor starting , in the morning. or when the car is complete cold.

No trigger errors present at the moment, but it's only run for 5 minutes at the moment!

Firmware is 1.0.73 (12x12) at the moment, but this will shortly be changed.

Ground wires are indeed connected together at the ECU.  And I took great care to follow the routes of them all so I would avoid ground loops.

The Impreza is mostly a MY95.  But there are bits from most years on there now!!  The video shows it starting from cold.

I have seen the wideo,
but the way starts is the trooble, all that cranking is going to be a bit anoying in the morning ;)

I found out the i could leave my car in my downhill driveway, but on the ignition, let the car roll a bit, and let out the clutch, and the car starts first time, even though i can sit and crank if for 5min without it sounding , no different from the first cranking you did in the video.

The problem is that all of a sudden it starts perfect, making me wunder, what the problem can be.

I found out that it helps if you don't have the sparks 180 degrees out... ;)

Is that on my config that the ignition is 180 degrees out?

I cant see if you are meaning it ironic ::)

I generated the config from scratch, apart from using some of your trigger settings, so no irony involved.  No idea if your config is right or not.  I presume it is since your car runs... ;)

I just timed up on wasted spark mode (ign dualout) so that we got more flashes from the timing lamp so we could see the marks more easily.  I then reverted to normal mode, but had everything 180 out   So the car backed instead of starting and Luke put it all on the video for dramatic purpose... ;)

Interestingly, mine worked out that the trigger was 63deg before TDC, and yours was 68 deg.  I don't see why this should be the case.  We verified this twice.

I now have a first cut running-in map made.  Looking forward to visiting the garage one lunchtime for a play.

I also have a stripped wagon shell arriving soon (with a bit of luck) for conversion to an off-road autotest vehicle.  I see no reason why this shouldn't be VEMSed.

""Interestingly, mine worked out that the trigger was 63deg before TDC, and yours was 68 deg.  I don't see why this should be the case.  We verified this twice.""

Hmm , yes that is indeed strange,
But i now have the problem with the advance that i need to put in the megatune table, that needs to be much higher then the actual value, when cruising i have max advance 63.75 degrees,

I run 1.0.73 firmware with 14x16maps now, but will upgrade to 1.0.78 14x16 when i get the time.
I just have to load a complete different firmware and config from another car, to see if i can get the advance problem go away.

Are you still using the Subaru ignitor (or their active coils)?

I´m running unmolested wiring,
Meaning the its complety oe, the only thing i have changed, if the map sensor, as the scaling from the vems does not fit with the subaru mapsensor.

So i´m running the external ignitor and the cops,i just run wastedspark with duelout, from the stepperchip

I had very little success with the OE ignitor (based on some Nissan experience).  So I bridged wires across the ignitor and used the internal IGBTs.

Okay,

there is no problems running like i do now, the only trooble is when cranking/starting,

I will fire completly random, and then suddenly start, like there have never been a problem.

i have still not had the time to find out what can course this, but when i changed to a 36-1 on the Impreza the problem when away, so i do belive that it´s a problem with the hardware on the board,as a link can read the same problem without the starting problems..

I would like to hear a update , if yours is starting without problems, becourse on the video it does not start like oe, it also sounds like it fires a bit random??

I will provide updates as the tuning progresses.  The tables in the car were a simple global 30% VE, 10 degree timing and lambda = 1.  Not surprising that it started and ran badly!

Did you get to run the car?,

I would be interested to know if you got the Oe map sensor to read the right value?

And offcourse if the starting og the car is painless :)

Did a bit more tuning today.  And worked on removing the ABS etc...

I'm using the high pressure internal VEMS MAP sensor.  I can get away with less plumbing that way.

The car starts on the key, with none of the throttle feathering.  It's almost like OE now thanks to getting the IAC valve working the right way round and getting the VE table right.  The engine is much more consistant than the Griff at idle, but I put that down to it not having a wild cam, so no charge robbing and other nastiness.  But it's never going to sound like a Nascar at 6k ;)

It's even moved in and out of the workshop under its own power now - not fast because there's only the handbrake to stop!  No sign of trigger errors, even when the fans cut in and out (which caused noise and errors for a while on the Griff)

All I need now is a good compressor map for an FP Green turbo and an MOT test and it'll be ready to tune and run in (at a dismal 1 bar of boost - target is >2 bar if the transmission will take it)

Great news that it´s running  :)

"No sign of trigger errors, even when the fans cut in and out (which caused noise and errors for a while on the Griff<"

I had that on the Legacy too, cured it with raising the trigger level to above 200mv, on the lm1815,
did you do any hardware changes on the vems board with the trigger signals  to get the Impreza running?

I just think its strange that i have had 1 my99 Impreza ,and the my92 legacy, that both had trooble with the cranking/start no as bad in the Impreza as the Legacy,

No changes to the vems board - I was VERY careful with the main grounding and made sure no inputs were allowed to be left floating.

hmm, maybe that is the trooble with mine, but just a bit strange that it´s on two cars,

I must check up on the wiring then, it´s just easy´er to mount a new triggerwheel, when i´m having so much trooble with it,
I´m thinking that it might be the startermotor, that is making the noise, as the car start instantly when i is push started,
I must think of a way i can test that, maybe get the startmotor turning from another batteri??

Ps i have just handed over the keys to the newage customer, and he could not tell the difference between the oe ecutek´ed ecu, and the vems ecu, when running normal, so that´s just great :)
