Hi guys,
im on the hunt for a new laptop after mine tried racing me down our stairs :o
Do any of the new lappys have the RS232 port?
or will i have to get a usb-RS232 adaptor???
I have read on hear a few times of members having probs talking to there ecu's when using the usb adaptor,
is this still happening? or is there a fix now???
any help or suggestions welcome, as cant tune the car at the moment >:(
You'll be hard pressed to find a new reasonably priced laptop with a RS232 connector, I know that Emil and Jorgen have newish IBMs with serial ports, but I've been using USB only laptops for about four years now.
The reason I don't have any problems with the USB->RS232 converter is because I use an EasySync one

The FDTI chipset seems to be one of the best.
HP and Dell have some laptops with real built-in serial ports too, you really have to look for it..
Even then, I've seen one where it's all handled internally through USB anyway.. can't remember where I saw it now.
The upcoming test releases of VemsTune use a completely different serial communications library, we have had better luck with it. Check the software section for Sambas latest package (2010-05-15).

I bought an easysync on the advice of Rob and have only had one issue which seems to be common on the last release of vemstune regarding firmware upgrading other than that it's been rock solid.
I had that issue when I put the adaptor in my desktop running Win7, the usual delay setting change sorted it.
cheers guys,
i gather vems tune and MT work fine on win7?
Both work fine with win7. Don't worry about lack of RS232 - the FTDI USB thingies work fine.
laptops here,
sony vaio,
which was the version of VT i need to run with the easysnc usb adaptor?
had a search and got all mixed up with versions etc,
cheers guys...
ordering the above adaptor this week,

Rob what drivers did you use for the adaptor mate?
im running win7 on the new lappy..
I have no idea! I will try and find out which drivers are on there - but I'm not entirely sure how (I'm on a kind of Win7 learning curve that I'm really not arsed about!)
i know that feeling mate.
also ordered the adaptor last night that you said about and that your using,
You're bound to get a driver disk with it.
cheers,
arrived today,
and the new sony lappy talks to the ecu via the adaptor,
thanks every one, nice bit of kit that Rob,
dig the flashing blue lights on the side of the adaptor :D ;D
