ECU bypass capacitor
« on: September 24, 2012, 03:01:29 pm »
I am still having trouble with my ECU dropping out when I crank the engine. I believe my service manual (although it's been a while since I came across this info) suggests that the battery voltage will drop to ~10v during cranking. I was considering putting in an external bypass cap to handle the voltage drop, so I was wondering if anyone has done this, and what they used. -Or any suggestions.
Thanks!

A fresh battery and thicker lines between the battery and starter is the first thing I would fix. Also check that the engine is properly grounded in at least two places to the chassis, also check battery negative to chassis.  It's also possible that the starter is getting worn and has too much internal friction.

Sorry, can't help you on the direct question ..

I've got all of those suggestions covered. New starter, new optima red battery, lots of cable and solid grounds.
My battery is moved to the trunk, so I may have to live with it but I've got a buddy who's going to give me a 1F cap. We'll see if that does the trick.
