20V NA 5 window dist. trigger
« on: December 31, 2018, 03:07:33 pm »
First, Hello everyone!
I'm just returning to my project after a year+ delay (life).
I built a 2.6L I5 engine for my syncro vanagon. It's built essentially as an AAN, on a 2.6L bottom end, without the turbo.
Currently, I'm running this engine on a single trigger- 5 window Hall Distributor.  The flywheel I am using (South Africa VW OE) has no reference pin.
I had it running in the past, but encountered an issue that needed attention, and then life got in the way.
So, I'm back to it, but starting low on the learning curve again!
I'm starting from scratch on the VEMS to confirm everything is OK before I continue, and hope y'all can help me get this thing out on the road!

Firmware 1.2.31

SO, first question!:

Can someone confirm that the trigger settings visual is not capable of properly handling the setup for a 5 window distributor as sole trigger?
The trigger is configured as secondary, used as primary.
My thought is that since the PT visual represents crank, it would need to display 2.5 teeth, which it can't, and it indicates INVALID SETTINGS.

Otherwise, the primary trigger is set up as:
Falling
Coil type
normal
5 teeth on wheel
First trigger tooth 0
next trigger tooth 1
Angular width of tooth 144  (720/5)

Thanks!
Nat

Hi!
Seems correct.

But there is serious downside: method is very imprecise. Because distributor is driven trough 3 drives: belt, chain, gears. Last two are crapy regarding precision.

There is a way with 60-2 gear in rear crank seal. VAG original solution.

Thanks for the confirmation!
And, yes, I'm aware of that solution, just not now... yet
